Banjo Dan and the Mid-Nite Plowboys

Spring 1998 Newsletter

 June 1998

Dear Friends:

Around this time of year we begin to sense that our band is not misnamed. Spring is a time for plowing and planting – and for us, a time to put out this newsletter so the friends we’ve made over the years will know where and when they can hear us. Publishing the newsletter seems kind of like plowing a familiar and fertile field, and planting the seed. Our harvest will be when we see you this summer in the seats at your local theater or concert hall, or spread out on a village square or recreation field, enjoying some of our bluegrass music on a lovely evening.

Speaking of our name, it now adorns a web page (how '90s), with a discography and information about our recordings and personnel, an audio clip, updates of our performance schedule, interesting links and lots of other stuff – even an exhaustive list of blasphemous banjo jokes. Go to www.sover.net/~daxtell/banjodan. Our friend Dan Axtell created the page for us. Also included are the email addresses of band members. People have been reading the page and contacting us for all sorts of reasons. Important: the web page contains a subscription box so you can receive our mailings list electronically – reducing our postage costs and sparing trees.

Check it out! We sincerely thank Dan Axtell for creating it. Now, about those gigs:

June 27: Rochester, VT. "Summernight ’98, Rochester High School. We play at 9 p.m., but there are earlier activities you’ll enjoy, including the spirited Kitchen Sync Cloggers.

July 3-5: The Vermont Family Bluegrass Festival; Champlain Fairgrounds, Winooski. A great opportunity for New Englanders to hear top-flight performers like the Nashville Bluegrass Band, Del McCoury, the Lonesome River Band, Northern Lights… and us. We play July 4. If you like bluegrass, don’t miss this one. (see BarbCal's  Vermont Bluegrass Events for some more information.)

July 18: Ethan Allen Homestead Festival; Burlington. This is an unusual festival. The organizers believe deeply in the value of acoustic music, and of hearing it without electronic amplification. So the performers play in spots scattered around the homestead, drawing intimate circles of listeners. We’ll carry the bluegrass torch in this eclectic gathering.

July 19: Franklin, VT., 7 p.m., village green; presented by the All Arts Council.

July 22: Garden City Plaza, Garden City, Long Island, N.Y.; noon-2 p.m.; also, Levittown Veterans Memorial Plaza, Levittown, Long Island, 8 p.m. We’ll participate in summer concert series in these two Long Island communities. Catch the urban Plowboys.

July 23: "Tupelo Honey," a restaurant and club Sea Cliff, N.Y. (38 Rosslyn Ave.). Plowboys play for a dinner at 7:30, reservations advised; then into the night with open admission.

July 24: Long Island appearance under negotiation. Check our web site.

July 25: East Meredith, N.Y. (near Oneonta). West Kortright Center, 8 p.m.

July 30: Concord, N.H., Eagle Park on Main Street. 7 p.m.-9 p.m.

August 1: Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation’s 75th Homestead Inauguration, at the Calvin Coolidge Homestead, Plymouth, Vermont. (Silent Cal demands equal Plowboy time with Ethan Allen). The Plowboys are honored to participate, and will play at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

August 1: The "Furry Folk Festival," Waterbury, Vt. This event is staged by our friend Patti Casey for the benefit of the critters. We play around 6:30.

August 2: Champlain Valley Festival, University of Vermont Redstone Campus, Burlington. One of the greatest annual traditional music events in the Northeast. Three days (July 31-Aug. 2) of varied, excellent music. We play on Sunday.

September 5: Wolfeboro, N.H., the gazebo bandstand. Our fourth year for this enjoyable concert at a beautiful location beside Lake Winnipisaukee. Concert 7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.

September 12; Plainfield, Vt. The 20th annual East Hill Farm 4-H Bluegrass Benefit. A genuine good time, with Cold Country and other performers. Watch for a story on this event in an upcoming issue of Vermont Life.

September 19: Shelburne, Vt. The Shelburne Farms Harvest Festival. Always a nice way to wind down the summer. We supply the tunes for the excellent Green Mountain Cloggers, then play a set of our own. Early Afternoon.

September 20: Springfield, Massachusetts.  The Big E, the Eastern States Exposition in the Vermont Pavillion, around 1-4 p.m.

Fans of the Midnite Plowboys often also enjoy The New Bremen Town Musicians, a bluegrass-influenced but more eclectic band featuring Plowboys Dan and Willy Lindner with other family members (including a fine female vocal trio). The Bremens are playing:

June 21: Dorset, VT; the Barrows House; series is called "The Littlest Folk Festival." A lovely setting (great inn and restaurant); concert on a plush lawn, among flowers, 4 p.m.

June 29: South Burlington, VT. Bremens play again on the lawn at the Pillsbury Manner Nursing Home on Williston Road (Rt. 2). You are welcome to drop by.

July 5: The Vermont Family Bluegrass Festival, Winooski (see above). The Bremens will play a Sunday morning gospel set.

July 29: Hinesburg, VT., concert at Lyman Park; 7-p.m.-8:30 p.m.

That’s it for now. Banjo Dan recordings remain available through Vermont Songbag (802-229-5733) or at the email address above. For bookings, use email or the mail address above. We’ll post additions to this schedule on our web site, and sometimes send postcards to people on the mailing list. Please come up and say hi if you make it to our shows.
